Kambulé: The Great Commemoration

The culmination of Emancipation celebration, August 1, begins in the early morning, when people are called to assemble to begin the commemoration of that historic event that would forever transform the lives and destinies of Africans in the Caribbean. The Kambulé, as it is called, begins at the Treasury Building with a libation (prayer) and the reading of the Emancipation proclamation, after which the procession wends its way through the streets of Port-of-Spain stopping at historically significant sites along the way; at Piccadilly Street, the site of the Yoruba village, to Hell Yard, site of the Kambule riots of 1881 then onto the centre of festival activities, the Lidj Yasu Omowale Emancipation Village for a full day of live entertainment, food and other activities. At day’s end, mirroring the ancestors who would hold a similar procession in observance of the end of slavery, a flambeaux procession leaves the Emancipation Village and heads back to the All Star’s Pan Yard – the final event of the historic day.

    Happy Birthday to Bukka Rennie November 30 When Steel Talks (WST) extends Happy Birthday greetings to  Bukka Rennie Activist, historian, columnist and writer, widower and the father of three, Bukka Rennie left Trinidad and Tobago in 1967 to pursue studies in History and Political Science at Sir George Williams University (now Concordia) in Montreal, Canada. After two years at Sir George he was jailed and then expelled along with forty-one other Black Caribbean students and forty-nine White Canadian students after involvement in political action against racism at that institution. He has refused since then to attend any university, including The University of the West Indies, even after the option to transfer credits was offered, and accepted by others.   Anthony Williams Some accomplishments by Anthony Williams as listed by former North Stars player  David Maunday Scientific Anthony Williams involved in putting pan on wheels in the late 1950s.   The placement of notes on the tenor pan in the 4th and 5th formation.   The grooving of notes on pans in a spider web pattern (more notes achieved).   Placement of notes on the six bass in fourths (a virtual lower extension of the tenor pan).   Placement of notes on their double second and 3 pan cello carries similar patterns making it easy for players to migrate from one section to the other.   Tony’s quality of tuning produced a very unique tone with his early use of harmonics.   Inventor of the 4 pan (a form of cello pan).   Anthony Williams made outsize pans (larger than the standard 55 gallon drums) using sheath metal which he tuned [into] some tenor pans, cellos and bass, some of which were used on the Ivory and Steel Recordings in 1969. ...
