NY Times   By Zachary Woolfe Andy Akiho ’s 11-part, 80-minute new work for percussion quartet is a lush, brooding celebration of noise. Nathan Bajar for The New York Times Akiho has written substantial works for  steel pan ,  for percussion , for  marimba and string quartet , for  snare drum and sampled dog barking , and many other configurations — even a  concerto for onstage Ping-Pong players  and orchestra. But “Seven Pillars” is a breakthrough for him, in its 80-minute length and its conceptual complexity. The Aubrapan: Revival of a lost invention

Image
The First Aubrapan S. E. Maloney', C. A. C. Imbert2, A. G. Bryan3 Department of Engineering, University of Cambridge, Trumpington Street, Cambridge, CP2 1PZ, England, Abstract The Aubrapan is a new design of the melody (or soprano) pan developed in 1978 by Guyanese pan maker and papist Aubrey Bryan in the United Kingdom. In the Aubrapan the higher frequency notes are placed nearest to the rim of the pan in contrast to the center of the pan where most high notes are generally located. The lower octaves are placed directly opposite each other in order to facilitate a pendulum-like action of the arms — these ascend in whole tones. This concept facilitates easier and rapid playing of the chromatic scale in single and double note form. In this paper we describe the development of the Aubrapan and attempt to discover why the Aubrapan has not yet found a place among the steelpan family. To answer this and other questions, the experiences of the Aubrapan's inventor will be noted and a

Their musical appetite seems quite encompassing and the loyalty to a single band as in the earlier years seems to be a thing of the past. Not that this is necessarily a bad thing but when considering cause and effect perhaps bands now have to structure and plan differently even from the organizers’ perspective.”  -- Florence “Flo” Ghany Relevant content  Meet Florence “Flo” Ghany - Trinidad & Tobago

And listen again to Shadow: "Everything is in harmony/Until the farmer get hungry.../The farmer comes searching the nest/The cock bawl out loud in protest/Cook curry ochro!..." See complete article
