August 11th Declared World Steelpan Day

It’s official - August 11th has been declared as “World Steelpan Day.” 

This, as the United Nations adopted a Draft Resolution today at the 92nd Plenary Meeting for it to be annually observed on the UN's calendar. 

Minister of Tourism, Culture and the Arts, Randall Mitchell, spoke at a UN sitting in New York on Monday where he shared key details about the national instrument.

Among the ones who came back and were in the early steelband movement in Grenada was a fella named Willan Dewsbury. He was part of the Grenada steelband called Hell Cats (he’s the guy holding the flag in the photo - mid 1950s). He later became an MP and served as Minister of Culture. It may have a ways to go, being a fairly young creation, but I believe pan can progress, develop and infiltrate music of all cultures.
