The experience of steelpan music is something that can be difficult to put into words, but when Attillah Springer was interviewed as part of "Pan Is..." a short-format documentary for the National Gas Company (NGC) which explores the genesis and evolution of Trinidad and Tobago’s national instrument, she managed to tap into it.

The feelings stirred by Attillah’s lively retelling of her adventures at Panorama, the instrument’s most illustrious music competition, seemed to naturally lend themselves to a short film format. The timing was perfect: after two years of COVID-19 restrictions, Carnival 2023 would be the first in-person festival. Director Walt Lovelace, producer Janine Mendes-Franco, and photographer Jason C. Audain understood that while the experience of “going pan” is communal, it is at the same time, individual. Perhaps you will find some of the beauty of your own pan experience in it.

Herman “Rock” Johnston On this day April 30, 2001, Herman Johnston, who rocketed to fame from his native Trinidad with his innovative work on the steelpan music instrument, loses his battle with cancer at age 63. During a career that catapulted him from his native Trinidad to appearances at the United Nations, Lincoln Center, Radio City Music Hall and with the Boston Symphony at its summer festival in Tanglewood, Mr. Johnston's repertoire spanned musical genres, including rock, spiritual, classical, show tunes and Caribbean folk melodies.   “STEEL PAN, oh what an invention./It should be the pride of our nation./Steelband music the world knows about it,/And is we invent it so why should we disregard it?/But what I am seeing lord it have me grieving./Why is the steelband still suffering?” – Merchant. When Merchant sang Pan in Danger he was begging our country to pay respect to the instrument that was born in Trinidad and Tobago – it being the only instrument invented in the 20th century. At that time there was a lot of lip service paid to the steel pan, but nothing changed. In 1998, Ian “Teddy” Belgrave, a teacher at the Arima Senior Comprehensive School, initiated a meeting inviting teachers who were interested in promoting the national instrument as a necessary part of the school’s curriculum.
