Tribute to Erica Renaud at Pan Is Sweet


In the midst of all the joy, happiness and goodwill that 2019’s “Pan Is Sweet” generated, there was a bitter-sweet moment of deep pain and reflection coupled with happy memories, as Brooklyn Steel Orchestra (BSO) honored and remembered the late vibrant panist Erica Renaud, who was abruptly taken away from the New York steelband community.

Erica was all that Pan in Brooklyn is about. She possessed an insatiable love for the art form, culture and people that was infectious to all who were around and performed with her.

James Clarkson   April 21st When Steel Talks extends Birthday Greetings to panist James Clarkson James Clarkson was born in Grenada on 21 April 1943 and has had a distinguished lifelong career in music with early exposure at the age of 12. He later joined the band of the Royal Grenada Police Force, appeared on stage with his father’s band, and by 17 was a member of the band of the Trinidad and Tobago Defence Force as lead arranger and first trumpet player. By 23 years of age, he was the Director of Music of the band of the Royal Grenada Police Force, and soon became the arranger for the very successful Republic Bank Angel Harps Steel Orchestra , a post he still holds today. The Officers and Ranks of the Royal, Grenada Police Force (R.G.P.F.) take this opportunity to thank Commissioner James Clarkson OBE, QPM, Lmus, F. “Hear, O Lord” - The Goretti Group and Dixieland Steel Orchestra

  Maria Alonzo, a teacher at Holy Name, was the proud creator of this group. She and her students started the group as means of an extracurricular activity and expose the girls to charity works. Along with the visiting hospitals and the sick, the girls came together and composed their own music and songs such as ‘Sing out my Soul’, ‘Here O Lord’ and many other songs which are still sung today. Maria Goretti is the patron saint of youth that gave this wonderful group its name. After 49 years, the group flourished and became a successful charity group that spreads Maria Alonzo’s passion and love all around Trinidad. Unfortunately, Maria died August 2nd. Although it is an emotional time, the Goretti members will always remember the motto she taught them: ‘If I can help somebody with a word or song then my living shall not be in vain.’ Listen

Wilbert “Junior” Gill Composer, Arranger, Panist, Percussionist   Artist biography Wilbert "Junior" Gill Born in London in 1963, Wilbert "Junior" Gill is nowadays based in Zürich, Switzerland, where he has been studying and teaching music since 1991. He is the musical director of the Music Center Affoltern, in Zürich that caters for drums, marimba, percussion, keyboard, and guitar + studio technique courses. He has performed with quite a few well known musicians, either on stage or in Jam Sessions. Phil Collins, Santana, George Duke, Airto Moriera and Victor Bailey – to name a few.   Aliandre Maraj Brooklyn, New York, USA -  The rays of sunshine warmed the sunny Sunday afternoon for the celebration of the life of Despers USA Steel Orchestra panist and vice captain Aliandre Maraj - just as he himself had warmed the hearts of all those he touched in his thirty years of life. At the Seven Days Adventist Church on East 21st Street in East Flatbush, people of all ages, from the young to the not-so-young gathered to bid him goodbye. In addition to his conventional family and friends, there was a considerable turnout in his steelband family among the New York pan fraternity in attendance. see more
