Tribute to Erica Renaud at Pan Is Sweet


In the midst of all the joy, happiness and goodwill that 2019’s “Pan Is Sweet” generated, there was a bitter-sweet moment of deep pain and reflection coupled with happy memories, as Brooklyn Steel Orchestra (BSO) honored and remembered the late vibrant panist Erica Renaud, who was abruptly taken away from the New York steelband community.

Erica was all that Pan in Brooklyn is about. She possessed an insatiable love for the art form, culture and people that was infectious to all who were around and performed with her.

Rehearsals are very controlled, centralized, and you are expected to know your notes before rehearsal begins. Americans in Trinidad often feel like Panorama rehearsals are confused and chaotic, but they are just not accustomed to how notes are passed around. When Sidney Poitier met the Trinidad and Tobago National Steelband in 1964

In Photo from left – Steve Regis, Elton “Smokey” John, Herman Colins, Conrad Hunte, unknown, unknown, Sidney Portier, Hugh Borde, unknown, In 1964, The Trinidad and Tobago National Steelband performed at the Moral Re-Armament Conference at Mackinac Island, Michigan. Maybe it was serendipity that caused Bahamian born American actor Sidney Poitier (1927-2022) to be present at one of the band’s performances while he was visiting his daughter, who was attending the conference. He was so overwhelmed with the music that he insisted on meeting the players. As can be seen in the photo, the meeting brought great joy to Poitier (with pan sticks in hand) and all the musicians. James Clarkson   April 21st When Steel Talks extends Birthday Greetings to panist James Clarkson James Clarkson was born in Grenada on 21 April 1943 and has had a distinguished lifelong career in music with early exposure at the age of 12. He later joined the band of the Royal Grenada Police Force, appeared on stage with his father’s band, and by 17 was a member of the band of the Trinidad and Tobago Defence Force as lead arranger and first trumpet player. By 23 years of age, he was the Director of Music of the band of the Royal Grenada Police Force, and soon became the arranger for the very successful Republic Bank Angel Harps Steel Orchestra , a post he still holds today. The Officers and Ranks of the Royal, Grenada Police Force (R.G.P.F.) take this opportunity to thank Commissioner James Clarkson OBE, QPM, Lmus, F.
