Global - ....Grandfather was flown back to Venezuela, and later Trinidad, where they named Gonzales, Belmont, after him. Rudolph Charles [“Charlo”] insisted that I was born on the Laventille Hill. Little did he know I was born in Gonzales, a ritual for all our families. Charlo must have meant conceived, not born.

Anyway, in Vietnam, I was in the trenches, too — defensive perimeters made up of wire, mines, machine guns, sandbags and bunkers. I spoke to Grandfather one night when my company was expecting the Viet Cong (VC) to roll in. These night devils would disrupt your sleep in a minute. So I meditated with him as if he were prayers sent by the Almighty. I felt relieved.

On the battlefield, we played a game of survival, young uninformed Trini-American soldiers.

Well done! UKASPO (UK All Steel Percussion Orchestra) - (Ebony Steelband, Mangrove Steelband, Croydon and Metronomes steel orchestras) performing at the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations

When Steel Talks extends congratulations to all involved in the historical grand steel orchestra music production for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee outside Buckingham Palace on Sunday 5 June 2022. It was an awesome performance and an occasion with significant cultural and historical importance - particularly in recognition of the importance of the Windrush Generation. Performing the musical works of the late great calypsonian Lord Kitchener (Aldwyn Roberts) was very appropriate. Lord Kitchener himself was one of the most famous members of what has now been acknowledged and referred to as the historic “Windrush Generation.” One of the last surviving members of TASPO (Trinidad All Steel Percussion Orchestra), Sterling Betancourt , had the honor of conducting UKASPO (UK All Steel Percussion Orchestra).  That was the name given the four steel-orchestra combination ( Ebony Steelband ,  Mangrove Steelb...

Wilbert “Junior” Gill Composer, Arranger, Panist, Percussionist   Artist biography Wilbert "Junior" Gill Born in London in 1963, Wilbert "Junior" Gill is nowadays based in Zürich, Switzerland, where he has been studying and teaching music since 1991. He is the musical director of the Music Center Affoltern, in Zürich that caters for drums, marimba, percussion, keyboard, and guitar + studio technique courses. He has performed with quite a few well known musicians, either on stage or in Jam Sessions. Phil Collins, Santana, George Duke, Airto Moriera and Victor Bailey – to name a few. Junior has learnt to master the steelpan, through listening and learning from the pan musicians of the so called “Old School“, in the likes of Gary Chang, Ken Johnson, Selwyn Baptiste, Pedro Burgess, Sterling Betancourt, Russ Henderson, Aubrey Bryan, Zigilee Constantine, Kenrick Isidore, Boots Davidson, Tony Charles and his first ever teacher Clyde Dias.
