Former Steelpan player KEB MO from Compton to multi-Grammy winner

Keb Mo is the first to tell you he was never crazy about school or academics. It was music that came naturally to the young man. Music was his passion. He was intoxicated with the sound of percussion instruments and hypnotized by the rhythm of the drums. So much so, that Keb Mo started playing the steel drums with a local calypso group called, the Young Calitino Steel Drum band. He played steel drums in that band from eleven-years-old to age nineteen. Their group was popular around the South Los Angeles area and at that young age he began working hotel gigs with them and private parties.

“I started playing the steel drums because a guy in our Compton, California neighborhood built and played the steel drums. Coincidentally, he was probably the only American making steel drums who came from Trinidad and happened to live on my block. He’s not around anymore. He passed away a few years ago. But his name was Chuck Countee. I’m still really good friends with his son Carlos. I got so good that at the age of fourteen I was hired to play my first studio session on steel drums at the Gold Star Recording studios and I even got paid union scale. I was really green, but I was having a lot of fun.”

James Clarkson   April 21st When Steel Talks extends Birthday Greetings to panist James Clarkson James Clarkson was born in Grenada on 21 April 1943 and has had a distinguished lifelong career in music with early exposure at the age of 12. He later joined the band of the Royal Grenada Police Force, appeared on stage with his father’s band, and by 17 was a member of the band of the Trinidad and Tobago Defence Force as lead arranger and first trumpet player. By 23 years of age, he was the Director of Music of the band of the Royal Grenada Police Force, and soon became the arranger for the very successful Republic Bank Angel Harps Steel Orchestra , a post he still holds today. The Officers and Ranks of the Royal, Grenada Police Force (R.G.P.F.) take this opportunity to thank Commissioner James Clarkson OBE, QPM, Lmus, F. Panman Dane Gulston calls for Taste of Panorama boycott

 Newsday SOUR NOTE: Dane Gulston who is calling on fellow panmen to boycott the Taste of Panorama event Gulston, along with Robert Hernandez, Gerard Mendez and Earl Morris, said the event should not be held as Pan Trinbago is not constitutionally in right standing. The men said elections were due in October last year and to date there has been no mention of that happening soon and as such, the current executive is operating illegally and any event supported by Pan Trinbago should not be supported by panmen. On Monday NCC chair Winston Peters said an estimated $35 million will be allocated to produce a semblance of Carnival with events for vaccinated only. This announcement was bitter-sweet with some accepting whatever aspect of the culture they can get after last year’s cancellation and others finding the decision lacking the taste of Carnival.
