PanoGrama pivots to hybrid model

Born 3 years ago during the heights of the COVID-19 restrictions and lockdowns, the history-making PanoGrama has and continues to captivate the international steelpan community.

Under the stewardship of Tobagonian Nevin Roach, the competition has seen 3 editions since its inception. However, those pannists eager to seize their opportunity to participate this year will have to wait, according to Roach.

“My team and I have done a great job with the platform to date. We have not only seen tremendous growth with the competition but also with many of the young participants who we try to impact in a positive way. I think now is the right time to step back for a bit to re-imagine the competition for the benefit of the participants and other major stakeholders”, Roach said.

When pressed about plans, Roach indicated that PanoGrama will shift from its regular virtual operations to a hybrid model.

“We are looking to host participants in one country for part of the competition, where, in addition to the performances, we can add cultural exchange, community outreach, and other components and activities which we think would help to produce well-rounded pannists. The ‘Knowledge for Success’ development series will be restructured and expanded to include digital marketing among other topics.”

Last year, PanoGrama partnered with the International Development Bank to influence youths at the 2022 Cheer Fair, while CEO Roach also worked along with the Ministry of Youth Sports and Culture – Bahamas as part of a cultural exchange and steelpan development programme.

Northern Illinois University Professor of Music, Liam Teague, who is also an adjudicator and development officer for PanoGrama, shared that he is in full support of the new direction and is looking forward to working with new talents.

Nevin Roach and his PanoGrama team are passionate about the holistic development of all the competition’s participants and their general well-being; this resonates deeply with me, and I am proud to be able to serve PanoGrama’s stakeholders."

It is expected that the competition will resume in 2025. The 2022 title was captured by Mathieu Borgne of France, while Trinidad and Tobago’s Hanif Goodridge and Shaquille ‘Flogo’ Forbes finished in 2nd and 3rd respectively.

Patron of the Arts Artistic Bursary 2023 designed to assist aspiring panists across the Caribbean and beyond

The Artistic Bursary 2023 award is designed to assist aspiring panists across the Caribbean and beyond in pursuing studies leading to the Bachelor of Fine Arts in the Performing Arts (BFA) with specialisation in Music (Steelpan) or the Advanced Pan Fellowship Program Certificate at The University of Trinidad and Tobago (UTT).  The Award  The award will provide three (3) individual grants of USD$5000 to the first prize winner, USD$3000 to the second prize winner, and USD$2000 to the third prize winner. These amounts are to assist in covering the cost of tuition, travel, accommodation and course material for their first year of study.

This is the way... The Mandalorian soundtrack, which was composed by Swedish musician Ludwig Göransson.   Göransson has a body of work that makes him worthy of providing music for the popular Disney+ series. Göransson won an Oscar in 2019 for the Black Panther score and has been nominated this year for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. He has also won two Emmys for The Mandalorian and several Grammys. Goransson also received much acclaim for his work with writer-actor-musician Donald Glover aka Childish Gambino. No New York Panorama Brooklyn, New York, USA -  It’s easy to be angry. Sometimes it seems like our entire culture is being destroyed right before our very eyes. This year’s lack of a Panorama in New York is disappointing on so many dimensions. Even if we allow for some grace in the post-COVID (is it really post?) come-back era, if we look far enough down the road we can see that pan as we know it is irreparably damaged and changed when we don’t hold the competition.   “STEEL PAN, oh what an invention./It should be the pride of our nation./Steelband music the world knows about it,/And is we invent it so why should we disregard it?/But what I am seeing lord it have me grieving./Why is the steelband still suffering?” – Merchant. When Merchant sang Pan in Danger he was begging our country to pay respect to the instrument that was born in Trinidad and Tobago – it being the only instrument invented in the 20th century. At that time there was a lot of lip service paid to the steel pan, but nothing changed.
