PanoGrama steelpan workshops in the Bahamas

Despite the curtains falling on the immensely popular PanoGrama virtual steelpan competition in June this year, the rapidly growing organisation has remained active since then. PanoGrama Entertainment (PE) continued to expand its youth development campaign under the stewardship of CEO and Founder, Nevin Roach, conducting workshops with students and educators in the Bahamas earlier this month.

When asked about the opportunity, Roach said “Just to think that I started PanoGrama in 2020 on Instagram and ideas that I jot down on paper are now unfolding, it’s an amazing feeling. I am grateful for the chance to inspire and educate through PanoGrama. Thanks to the Ministry of Youth, Sports, and Culture (MOYSC) – Bahamas for believing in PanoGrama and giving me the opportunity to share my country’s culture.”

PanoGrama 2022 winner Mathieu Borgne was slated to join Roach in the Bahamas as part of his grand prize but was unable to do so due to circumstances beyond his control.

The workshops were hosted by the MOYSC Bahamas and were designed to help revitalize steelpan in the country. Roach shared information on the benefits of PanoGrama to aspiring soloists, the history of steelpan and arranging techniques, among other topics.

Anja Bowe, Administrative Associate within the MOYC Bahamas, indicated that people immediately thought about the Caribbean when they heard of steelpan.

“We wanted to breathe a little life back into the development of this artform,” said Ms. Bowe. “Some people may think that it’s an artform that has died down, but we wanted to ensure that we can revive this and take it to the Bahamian children and show them how much fun there is in playing the instrument and what melodies can be created from the steelpan.

Lyford Cays International School music teacher, Elizabeth Taylor, noted that “For me, this was more than just an eye-opening experience. I was sitting there thinking that I know exactly what I want to do with my students next week, next month. I can take the information that was shared and apply it in my classes.”

Roach also presented at the University of Bahamas, the Bishop Michael Eldon School, and Grand Bahama’s newest music academy.

PE has also been active in Trinidad and Tobago, participating in the 2022 Inter-American Development Bank’s (IDB) Chair Fair, exciting youth about opportunities in steelpan. The Barbados-based Tobagonian, Roach, looks forward to engaging more youth and educators in the future.

The Artistic Bursary 2023 award is designed to assist aspiring panists across the Caribbean and beyond in pursuing studies leading to the Bachelor of Fine Arts in the Performing Arts (BFA) with specialisation in Music (Steelpan) or the Advanced Pan Fellowship Program Certificate at The University of Trinidad and Tobago (UTT).  The Award  The award will provide three (3) individual grants of USD$5000 to the first prize winner, USD$3000 to the second prize winner, and USD$2000 to the third prize winner. James Clarkson   April 21st When Steel Talks extends Birthday Greetings to panist James Clarkson James Clarkson was born in Grenada on 21 April 1943 and has had a distinguished lifelong career in music with early exposure at the age of 12. He later joined the band of the Royal Grenada Police Force, appeared on stage with his father’s band, and by 17 was a member of the band of the Trinidad and Tobago Defence Force as lead arranger and first trumpet player. By 23 years of age, he was the Director of Music of the band of the Royal Grenada Police Force, and soon became the arranger for the very successful Republic Bank Angel Harps Steel Orchestra , a post he still holds today. Star Wars: The Mandalorian Theme | Epic Music

This is the way... The Mandalorian soundtrack, which was composed by Swedish musician Ludwig Göransson.   Göransson has a body of work that makes him worthy of providing music for the popular Disney+ series. Göransson won an Oscar in 2019 for the Black Panther score and has been nominated this year for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. He has also won two Emmys for The Mandalorian and several Grammys. Goransson also received much acclaim for his work with writer-actor-musician Donald Glover aka Childish Gambino. Göransson reportedly met writer-actor-musician Donald Glover while composing for the NBC show Community. Since then, the two men have worked together on a number of Childish Gambino (Glover’s stage name) projects, including the widely praised album Awaken, My Love and the popular song “This Is America.”

New York Steelband Panorama is a different animal

No New York Panorama Brooklyn, New York, USA -  It’s easy to be angry. Sometimes it seems like our entire culture is being destroyed right before our very eyes. This year’s lack of a Panorama in New York is disappointing on so many dimensions. Even if we allow for some grace in the post-COVID (is it really post?) come-back era, if we look far enough down the road we can see that pan as we know it is irreparably damaged and changed when we don’t hold the competition. We can’t blame this all on gentrification and neo-colonization. see more
