Layman Scott High School’s Senior Band plays ‘What about Us’ during the Senior Steelpan Band Competition

Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands - The Department of Education Services (DES) on the evening of Saturday May 21 closed the curtains on the 2022 National Children’s Festival of the Arts (NCFA) programme with the 17^th annual staging of the Amin Mohammed Steelband Competition at the John Gray High School Auditorium in collaboration with the Cayman National Bank.

Audiences were treated to melodious steelpan renditions of popular soca and reggae songs and classical pieces. These were performed by eight competing soloists and 11 steel bands, one of which was trained by music teacher and panist extraordinaire, Dr. Kassandra Scott Salazar, who Cayman National Bank honoured on Saturday evening for her significant contribution to steel pan education.

Happy Birthday to Edwin Ayoung March 19th When Steel Talks extends Birthday Greetings to composer and performing artist “Crazy” - Edwin Ayoung Edwin Ayoung or “Crazy” - born Edwin Ayoung in 1944, on Maraval Road in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad of a Venezuelan mother and Trinidadian father of Chinese descent, was - in his youth - as skilled and competitive in his country’s national pastime of cricket, as he has been now for years as a world-travelled musician, performing artist and composer. Though dubbed “The Loveable Lunatic of Soca,” Ayoung has time and again not been given his due in his native land, yet remains one of the most commercially successful artists on the international soca scene. An experimentalist, he pioneered the unique musical genre known as Parang Soca and played a leading role in promoting Chutney Soca.
