Happy Birthday to Emily Lemmerman

When Steel Talks extends Birthday Greetings to panist, Emily Lemmerman

“Being a female tuner unquestionably surprises people. Some people just don’t believe it until they see me do it. So I just do my job, and let my work speak for itself. It’s not always a bad thing to be underestimated – it’s easier to exceed expectations!“

She is both a respected tuner, builder and player. She has lived and experienced the challenge of Trinidad Panorama and the US school system. In an exclusive interview with When Steel Talks, Emily Lemmerman shares her experiences and extraordinary journey with the steelpan.

For more than 50 years, Lord Kitchener, who died Feb. 11 at the age of 77, gave calypso some of its wittiest and most infectious musical compositions. Calypso, a genre grounded in the Caribbean islands of Trinidad and Tobago, is both poetry in music and editorial in song. Calypso songs praise or condemn their subjects. The lyrics tell of the life of th...
