Historical Tidbits
Hailing from San Fernando, Fonclaire was formed in 1965 by a group of people that included Milton "Wire" Austin, Kenneth "Sharkhead" Arthur, Hatim Lalla, Mervyn Scott, and the Swanson brothers. The band adopted its name from two adjoining streets in San Fernando: Fonrose and Claire.
From 1965 to 2014, Fonclaire had four sponsors: Joseph Sabga & Sons, Ltd; NBC; Vat 19; and NLCB. The band made its impact on the steelband music scene in the 1970s with Rudine Austin as arranger. Ken Philmore assumed this position from the mid-1980s through the early 1990s and led the band to many Panorama finals. info from Steelband - Fonclaire   - R. Emrit

  Happy Birthday to Edwin Ayoung  March 19th When Steel Talks extends Birthday Greetings to composer and performing artist “Crazy” - Edwin Ayoung  Edwin Ayoung or “Crazy” - born Edwin Ayoung in 1944, on Maraval Road in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad of a Venezuelan mother and Trinidadian father of Chinese descent, was - in his youth - as skilled and competitive in his country’s national pastime of cricket, as he has been now for years as a world-travelled musician, performing artist and composer. Though dubbed “The Loveable Lunatic of Soca,” Ayoung has time and again not been given his due in his native land, yet remains one of the most commercially successful artists on the international soca scene. An experimentalist, he pioneered the unique musical genre known as Parang Soca and played a leading role in promoting Chutney Soca. Devon Cumberbatch “I would love for the instrument to be as mainstream as the piano, guitar or violin. It may have a ways to go, being a fairly young creation, but I believe pan can progress, develop and infiltrate music of all cultures. I would love to see it as an instrument for all peoples, and universally accepted.
