“...my main role is to be a mentor, a leader, an organiser and a role model for the entire band. I think it’s very important to have women in lead roles, because this encourages girls and young women to express themselves and take on an active role.”

She is one of the main driving forces behind the success of Panorama Champion, Laborie Steelpan. In an exclusive interview with When Steel Talks - mentor, director, manager and musician Quill Barthelmy shares her experiences, expectations and views on Pan in St. Lucia, and the steelpan art form.

James Clarkson   April 21st When Steel Talks extends Birthday Greetings to panist James Clarkson James Clarkson was born in Grenada on 21 April 1943 and has had a distinguished lifelong career in music with early exposure at the age of 12. He later joined the band of the Royal Grenada Police Force, appeared on stage with his father’s band, and by 17 was a member of the band of the Trinidad and Tobago Defence Force as lead arranger and first trumpet player. By 23 years of age, he was the Director of Music of the band of the Royal Grenada Police Force, and soon became the arranger for the very successful Republic Bank Angel Harps Steel Orchestra , a post he still holds today. The Officers and Ranks of the Royal, Grenada Police Force (R.G.P.F.) take this opportunity to thank Commissioner James Clarkson OBE, QPM, Lmus, F. Sincere condolences to the  Pan Lara, P an Evolution, Pan Masters and   Skiffle family, and the pan fraternity on the whole on the passing of  Devon Cumberbatch . Devon Cumberbatch “I would love for the instrument to be as mainstream as the piano, guitar or violin. It may have a ways to go, being a fairly young creation, but I believe pan can progress, develop and infiltrate music of all cultures. I would love to see it as an instrument for all peoples, and universally accepted. Twenty years of Pan in New York ain’t no joke. Many have tried but few have survived. Much more than a observance of longevity, survival, and sustainability, it was a genuine reminder of just how much of a cultural, historical and musical treasure-trove New York Pan is. His fortunes have gone very well politically in that period. And unless there is an unforeseen upset Eric Adam will become the next mayor of New York City in a day or so. Conversely, the fortunes of the New York steelband community has gone south in that same time period, becoming progressively worse. Indeed, there is enough blame to go around - from sleazy and corrupt promoters of pan events; envious, inept, distrustful, and short-sighted band leaders, and, of course, traitorous politicians. New York steelpan community took their destiny into their own hands and momentarily discarded the shackles of WIADCA. Practicing a serious case of "FUBU" - (For Us By Us) as every aspect this Panorama was executed by the NY Pan community. The New York Times gives figure of 20,000 people present at this event. In spite of untold obstacles the New York Pan community came together in a manner that has never been seen since and pulled off demonstrating what could be.
