Happy Birthday to Jimmy Chambers


Born in the Caribbean twin islands of Trinidad & Tobago (T&T), Jimmy Chambers traveled to England with great expectations of being a successful singer and has since realised that ambition.

Having graduated college, Jimmy met up with up-and-coming vocalists of the day including Robert Palmer with whom he co-fronted the band DaDa. Jimmy recorded solo after the demise of DaDa and had success in the dance charts in the 80s before recording an album with Paul Young and doing a world tour with him. He also performed at Wembley Stadium with Paul at LIVE AID in 1985.

In 1987 Jimmy teamed up with pals Jimmy Helms, George Chandler and Willy M and co-founded Londonbeat. Jimmy wrote the song “I’ve Been Thinking About You” which Londonbeat recorded. The song became a massive hit getting to #1 in 27 countries! Londonbeat still gigs regularly all over the world.

Jimmy has also recorded with other major artists such as Tina Turner (Break Every Rule) and Fine Young Cannibals (The Raw and the Cooked). In 2005 Jimmy wrote and collaborated with the group Laventille Rhythm Section of Trinidad and Tobago with the songs “Warriors” and “North Stand.”

In 2012 Jimmy wrote songs for Panorama – including Underdog, also for J’Ouvert; he wrote about the present situation in T&T and also for the Carnival celebrations. For 2013 he came with two songs for the Carnival season, – ’Rados! – a tribute to the legendary steel orchestra Desperadoes, and Trini Girls, in which he pays homage to the beauties of his Caribbean homeland. In 2014, the original version of ‘Blows’ was unveiled, along with Pan In Rio, while Pan Majesty was in the spotlight for 2015.

The Artistic Bursary 2023 award is designed to assist aspiring panists across the Caribbean and beyond in pursuing studies leading to the Bachelor of Fine Arts in the Performing Arts (BFA) with specialisation in Music (Steelpan) or the Advanced Pan Fellowship Program Certificate at The University of Trinidad and Tobago (UTT).  The Award  The award will provide three (3) individual grants of USD$5000 to the first prize winner, USD$3000 to the second prize winner, and USD$2000 to the third prize winner. These amounts are to assist in covering the cost of tuition, travel, accommodation and course material for their first year of study.

The Mandalorian soundtrack, which was composed by Swedish musician Ludwig Göransson.   Göransson has a body of work that makes him worthy of providing music for the popular Disney+ series. Göransson won an Oscar in 2019 for the Black Panther score and has been nominated this year for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. He has also won two Emmys for The Mandalorian and several Grammys. Goransson also received much acclaim for his work with writer-actor-musician Donald Glover aka Childish Gambino. Göransson reportedly met writer-actor-musician Donald Glover while composing for the NBC show Community. Since then, the two men have worked together on a number of Childish Gambino (Glover’s stage name) projects, including the widely praised album Awaken, My Love and the popular song “This Is America.”

No New York Panorama Brooklyn, New York, USA -  It’s easy to be angry. Sometimes it seems like our entire culture is being destroyed right before our very eyes. This year’s lack of a Panorama in New York is disappointing on so many dimensions. Even if we allow for some grace in the post-COVID (is it really post?) come-back era, if we look far enough down the road we can see that pan as we know it is irreparably damaged and changed when we don’t hold the competition.
