Style, history and originality were on full display as the focus of Pan in New York moved to the Brooklyn Museum auditorium on Saturday where CASYM presented its annual “Carols and Classics - A Holiday Extravaganza.”  From pint-sized players elevated by stepping on crates to reach their instruments - to CASYM Steel Orchestra’s respected stage side - they were all there.  The music organization’s tradition and undeniable success at attracting, developing and nurturing steelpan musicians from an early age into maturity, within the NYC public school educational system and community-based organizations - was an exhibition on what can be accomplished, with talent and dedication to education and excellence.

Rehearsals are very controlled, centralized, and you are expected to know your notes before rehearsal begins. When Sidney Poitier met the Trinidad and Tobago National Steelband in 1964

Maybe it was serendipity that caused Bahamian born American actor Sidney Poitier (1927-2022) to be present at one of the band’s performances while he was visiting his daughter, who was attending the conference. He was so overwhelmed with the music that he insisted on meeting the players. As can be seen in the photo, the meeting brought great joy to Poitier (with pan sticks in hand) and all the musicians. James Clarkson   April 21st When Steel Talks extends Birthday Greetings to panist James Clarkson James Clarkson was born in Grenada on 21 April 1943 and has had a distinguished lifelong career in music with early exposure at the age of 12. He later joined the band of the Royal Grenada Police Force, appeared on stage with his father’s band, and by 17 was a member of the band of the Trinidad and Tobago Defence Force as lead arranger and first trumpet player. By 23 years of age, he was the Director of Music of the band of the Royal Grenada Police Force, and soon became the arranger for the very successful Republic Bank Angel Harps Steel Orchestra , a post he still holds today. The Officers and Ranks of the Royal, Grenada Police Force (R.G.P.F.) take this opportunity to thank Commissioner James Clarkson OBE, QPM, Lmus, F.
