Style, history and originality were on full display as the focus of Pan in New York moved to the Brooklyn Museum auditorium on Saturday where CASYM presented its annual “Carols and Classics - A Holiday Extravaganza.”  From pint-sized players elevated by stepping on crates to reach their instruments - to CASYM Steel Orchestra’s respected stage side - they were all there.  The music organization’s tradition and undeniable success at attracting, developing and nurturing steelpan musicians from an early age into maturity, within the NYC public school educational system and community-based organizations - was an exhibition on what can be accomplished, with talent and dedication to education and excellence.

Among the ones who came back and were in the early steelband movement in Grenada was a fella named Willan Dewsbury. He was part of the Grenada steelband called Hell Cats (he’s the guy holding the flag in the photo - mid 1950s). He later became an MP and served as Minister of Culture. See the article in its original context from September 6, 1999, Section B, Page 3 The winners of the annual Panorama competition for steel bands, which is part of the lead-in to the West Indian American Carnival parade today in Brooklyn, were announced yesterday. Twelve bands participated in the event, which took place on Saturday night on the grounds of the Brooklyn Museum. Four bands played arrangements of '' In My House ,'' a song by Oba, and two of them took the top prizes. The Pantonic Steel Orchestra won the $9,000 first prize with an arrangement of ''In My House'' by Clive Bradley, whose arrangement of the same song for Witco's Desperadoes was the winner at the 1999 carnival in Trinidad in February. Pan Rebels, with an arrangement of ''In My House'' by Len (Boogsie) Sharpe, won the second prize of $7,000.
