"If the whole nation was a panyard, Trinidad would be the best place in the entire world." This was part of The Most Rev. Archbishop Charles Jason Gordon's message to all in attendance at the BP Renegades Steel Orchestra Panyard. The pan ensemble is currently celebrating its 75th anniversary. 


 

Dear friends, I had the privilege of giving greetings to all attendance at the BP Renegades Panyard. The pan ensemble is currently celebrating its 75th anniversary. I truly believe that If the whole nation was a panyard, Trinidad would be the best place in the entire world.

Herman “Rock” Johnston On this day April 30, 2001, Herman Johnston, who rocketed to fame from his native Trinidad with his innovative work on the steelpan music instrument, loses his battle with cancer at age 63. During a career that catapulted him from his native Trinidad to appearances at the United Nations, Lincoln Center, Radio City Music Hall and with the Boston Symphony at its summer festival in Tanglewood, Mr. Johnston's repertoire spanned musical genres, including rock, spiritual, classical, show tunes and Caribbean folk melodies. Ralph McDonald, David Rudder, Robert Greenidge performed at Lincoln Center New York New York - Pannist Robert Greenidge, percussionist Ralph MacDonald, keyboardist Onaje Allan Gumbs, drummer Buddy Williams, saxophonist Arturo Tappin, guitarist Scott Galt, bassist Nicholas Brancker, trumpeter Etienne Charles, vocalists Rhea and David Rudder commanded the attention of the audience at Jazz at Lincoln Center's Allen Room on Saturday June 16, 2007. It was a musical aggregation looked forward to by many, one that fulfilled expectations, and that prompted a sell-out of tickets to the event at least two weeks prior. Before arranging for steelband I used to do a little arranging (as a student) for the marimba ensemble at NIU. After purchasing a full set of pans from Clifford Alexis, I realized that I enjoyed the challenge of writing idiomatically for the instrument. In order to do performances (gigs) I realized early on that the repertoire had to please audiences of all ages and nationalities.
