Taking care of a family of 8 is no easy task but what makes it easier is the help of the rest of the family.”  -- Karen Codrington

She lives it, talks it and walks it full time - 24-7-365. She is one of the world's most successful steelpan parents. A panist and drummer in her own right, she oversees eight accomplished musicians. Mervyn Taylor Four distinguished presenters brought different perspectives on Mighty Sparrow’s phenomenal career at the symposium focused on the legendary artist, that took place Friday evening, April 8 at Medgar Evers College, presented by the Trinidad & Tobago Folk Arts Institute, in collaboration with the Medgar Evers College School of Professional & Community Development. The four presenters were billed as Prof. Lawrence Waldron, who teaches art at City College of CUNY; Winthrop Holder, an educator who is also author of the Classroom Calypso: Giving Voice to the Voiceless; poet Mervyn Taylor, whose poetry continuously engages the Caribbean culture spectrum; and attorney Khalick Hewitt, whose avid interest and research in calypso and steel band dates back to his youthful days in Port of Spain, Trinidad. The passing of Gary “Soup” Harrigin

Gary “Soup”  Harrigin Condolences on the passing of Master Tuner Roland Harrigin’s brother Gary Harrigin  aka  “Soup.” He was one of the brothers who took all of Roland’s pans to Rudolph Charles to hear once completed. Scholar, educator, champion Panorama arranger, drummer and ace panist Victor “Babu” Samuel has passed

When Steel Talks extends our sincere condolences to the family and friends of Victor “Babu” Samuel on his passing on June 28, 2022. Victor “Babu” Samuel  This man has other notable achievements, these include: the first foreigner to arrange for a steelband in Trinidad’s Panorama; the most successful arranger in Antigua’s Steelband history. He also “drilled” for the Phase II Pan Groove, one of Trinidad’s leading steelbands. Achievements such as these only confirm Victor “Babu” Samuel as the undisputed champion steelband arranger of Antigua. The Antigua Grammar School had an affiliation with the Supa Stars Steel Orchestra of which “Babu” later became its number one (1) drummer. There again, he impressed everyone including the band’s arranger Trinidadian Phillip  Vansupre, who once remarked, “If only I had that little boy playing

George Mason University awards Victor Provost the Adjunct Faculty Teaching Excellence Award!

  Victor Provost Outstanding teaching is an integral part of Mason’s mission and is deserving of significant recognition. The Teaching Excellence Awards are both institutional recognition and a monetary acknowledgment of the significant work that faculty members devote to course planning and preparation; curriculum development; and innovative teaching, advising, and mentoring. Victor was awarded a highly competitive, university-wide Adjunct Faculty Teaching Excellence Award by the Peter Stearns Center for Teaching and Learning! Faculty are nominated and must put together an extensive portfolio including the following: growth and development as an educator, student and learner engagement, assessment of student learning and achievement and finally, teaching effectiveness and impact. Victor will attend a celebration and reception in April in honor of all the awardees and will be presented a plaque and stipend by the university.   Leason Jacobs He was the winning Panorama drummer for  “ Phase II [Pan Groove]    in 2006, and 2008. Jacobs shared his thoughts as follows, with  When Steel Talks on some challenging aspects of drumming for Panorama Finals: " The most challenging aspect for me is having to concentrate on the music and still have to try and direct the rhythm section, because most people think its just a timing/rhythm that is needed, but the percussion section /engine room is used for colour/ mood and of course the drive behind it all.
